A few nights ago, my teeenage son requested I watch a youtube video he had just seen on facebook.
I asked, " What's this about"?
His response, " Kony".
I looked at him quizzically. "What's Kony?"
" Just watch", was his reply.
" Do you promise you'll watch this?” , he inquired as I lamented ," It's 29 min. long!".
"”Please, mom, this is important” , he said.
Yes, I promise”, I responded.
After the first three minutes, I was hooked. I’ve been a child advocate all my life and had somehow allowed these atrocities to go unnoticed in my reality.
I was appalled, upset , inspired, and ready to take action immediately. Here was the promise of one young man to another young man, over nine years ago, to do something about the injustice, killings and mutilations of young children and their families in Uganda.
Here was one man who gave his word to make a difference and kept it.
The “ Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 Campaign went viral and it is an ingenious idea of using our technological revolution in a way to unite the world, end social injustices, raise the awareness of people on the planet and unite us in a cause that will set a precedent for international justice.
Invisible children is an organization that has been diligently and passionately focusing on ending Africa’s longest running armed conflict and to expose Joseph Kony as the worst war criminial alive on the planet today.
Through a brilliantly orchestrated campaign by Invisible Children, Jospeh Kony now becomes a household name to millions of Americans. He now becomes known for the crimes and atrocities he has been committing for the past 26 years. In 1986, he began kidnapping children to create the LRA ( Lord’s Resistance Army). He turned young boys into child soldiers and young girls and women were raped and enslaved. There are reports stating that the LRA is responsible for having kidnapped over 30,000 children in its 26 year long history. The young soldiers are also forced to kill , mutilate and or torture parents, as well.
As I continued to watch the youtube video, I knew that I needed to do something and that I needed to take action now. My son requested the kit , which is available on the site,
www.invisiblechildren.com . On April, 20, 2012, my son and others will take to the streets , participating and creating the largest campaign, our small town has ever seen. My son is proud to be a part of a global movement, that is dedicated to bringing peace and safety to all of those currently residing in Africa and directly or indirectly affected by the terrors inflicted on them by Joseph Kony and his LRA.
You can take action , too. The time is now. Watch the video, order the kit, send the emails, circulate the information and be a part of this global movement.
Now , is the only time to ever take action.
